The dusky seaside sparrow lived in the salt marshes around Merritt Island near Kennedy Space Center. Those salt marshes were also home to mosquitos that the Space Center wanted gone in the 50s-60s. So the marshes were diked, flooded, packed with pesticides, and turned into a freshwater impoundment. The population was devastated, never to recover. They were declared extinct in 1990.
